Spike in Plant Theft hits Surrey
The Intelligence Team at The Equipment Register have advised that there is an active group in the Surrey area targeting construction sites for plant left overnight.
It has been estimated that over £100 million of plant is stolen each year. This figure is only set to rise with population growth and the need for more homes and commercial premises. (Source: https://www.selectadna.co.uk/plant-theft).
It is important that sites in Surrey and across the UK remain vigilant and take extra precautions to secure plant left on site overnight. Theft over the winter months is especially high due to the longer hours of darkness.
Buying used plant
Much of the plant that is stolen is then sold on the secondary market to unsuspecting companies and individuals. When buying second-hand plant, you must make sure what you are buying is legitimate equipment. The Equipment Register offers several services to help check and register plant. From only £10 you can check their database of over 900,000 items to see if what you are looking to buy is registered as stolen.
The Equipment Register also allows you to register newly purchased items, helps with valuations of plant equipment and allows you to report equipment as stolen if the worst does happen.

An annual insurance policy can be arranged to cover your Own Plant & Equipment against theft and damage.
We can also include cover for any Hired in Plant that you may use which will also cover any continued hiring charges you may incur if the equipment is stolen. Arranging your own annual policy is usually more cost effective than purchasing the hirers insurance product.
In addition we can provide cover for any materials kept on site under a Contract Works policy.
